Hair removal is a pain. Almost everyone has some unwanted hair, and trouble spots cover the gamut from eyebrows to toes.

Typical solutions like shaving, plucking, bleaching, and hair removal creams all come with downsides. Who hasn’t suffered from razor burn, bumps, or ingrown hairs? Worst of all, these temporary treatments demand constant upkeep.

That’s why so many people, men and women alike, have turned to laser hair removal. It’s a permanent solution that leaves you looking and feeling your best, always. Unwanted hair – and the side effects of battling it – will never leave you feeling self-conscious again.

How it works

The laser hair removal machine sends quick pulses of intense light into the hair follicle, damaging the cells that create hair. The light targets the hair only, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed.

The treatment works best on hairs that are actively growing, so it takes several treatments to see full results. Follicles that are not in the growth part of the hair cycle don’t absorb the energy of the laser, so they don’t die. It’s important to time your treatment series optimally to target missed hairs at the right moment in their cycle.

Common concerns

Does it hurt?

Advances in technology have greatly reduced the discomfort of laser hair removal. Older machines do hurt – the feeling can be like someone snapping a strong rubber band against your skin. New machines provide a much better experience.

Will it work for me?

It used to be true that laser hair removal did not work well for people with light hair or dark skin. Once again, new technology has changed the game. With the right laser, all but the blondest hair can be removed, and there is no danger of damage to dark skin. But be careful – before you make an appointment anywhere, make sure the type of laser they use will work for you!

Is it really permanent?

Yes! Laser hair removal is so popular precisely because it works so well. If you do a full treatment cycle on a consistent schedule, your unwanted hair will be gone forever.

What to expect

Before you get a treatment, there are a few important things you should do. Avoid any other hair removal treatments (shaving, tweezing, waxing, etc.) – the laser works best if there is about a quarter inch of hair showing. Also, stay out of the sun and away from tanning beds, as well as tanning lotions.

When you go in for a treatment, the technician will adjust the laser for your skin and hair tone. They will test a small spot first and watch any concerning reactions before proceeding. Depending on the size of the area you’re treating, the whole procedure can take 15 minutes to an hour.

Afterwards, your skin will probably be red and tender for a few days, much like a sunburn. Load up on sunblock, or better yet, just stick to the shade. And don’t pluck or wax between treatments – for maximum effectiveness, let the hair fall out on its own.
